Just a quick heads up for everyone who is interested in the Firefox web browser in one way or the other. Mozilla developer Brian Bondy just posted a status update for the Firefox Metro version of the browser that highlights some of the improvements and changes that the team made in the last couple of months.
Among the changes is a unified executable file that determines which front-end to display to the user of the operating system, improved gesture support, and other improvements for Windows 8 specific features. Brian also noted that the Metro and desktop version of Firefox won’t share the same profiles initially, and that Firefox Sync is used to sync data right away in the operating system. It still seems to be the plan to have both browsers share a single user profile in future releases.
It is only three months from the release of Windows 8 and getting a working stable version of Firefox for Metro out in that time will definitely be challenging for Mozilla.
For me, the question remains why someone would want to work with the Metro browser if the desktop browser is just a click away as well. Anyone who is having an answer to that?
In other news: A batch of screenshots of Mozilla’s upcoming mobile operating system Firefox OS has been posted on Tech Week Europe which showcase how Firefox OS looks like right now. First mobile phones with the operating system are expected to be sold in Brasil in 2013, and then likely in other markets later on in that year.
You can check out all 25 screenshots at the Tech Week Europe website. The phone interface looks clean and well designed. It remains to be seen how it will perform, but since it is first being launched in emerging markets, it is likely that there won’t be any complaints in this regard.
Here is a visual preview of the phone
What’s your take on Firefox OS? Do you think it can snag away market share from Google, Apple, Nokia or Microsoft, or will it remain a niche mobile OS?
