RapidDrive was first introduced by Rapidshare in 2011 as a way for
users of the service to upload files to cloud hosting services.
Yesterday the company announced that it has made available a new beta
version of RapidDrive for RapidPro users which allows them to integrate their Rapidshare account into the Windows file system.
The Rapidshare account is displayed in Windows Explorer like an external hard drive, allowing users to upload or download files easily from within the file manager without having to go through the Rapidshare website to do so. It needs to be noted that users can’t run software from the drive directly.
RapidDrive users get access to unlimited storage and traffic, direct downloads and SSL connections when transferring files just like RapidPro users do. Especially the unlimited storage and traffic options may be interesting as this is not something that other major services are offering right now.
Users can select the drive letter and label, autostart and right-click menu options in the RapidDrive user interface. The context menu option allows you to copy a file link to the Clipboard which can be pasted into emails or messages so that other users can download the linked files to their systems.
RapidDrive is currently only available for the Microsoft Windows operating system, with versions for other operating systems planned for future releases. Windows users need to log in with a RapidPro account to integrate their files and folders into Windows Explorer. Besides allowing users to drag and drop files to upload or download them, it also makes available direct uploading to Rapidshare from the Save As dialog of programs in the operating system. This way it is possible to save Office documents, music or videos directly on Rapidshare servers.
A RapidPro account starts at 9.90€ per month, with discounts available for longer period of times. A two year account for instance is currently offered for 99.90€ or 4.11€ per month.
RapidDrive is fundamentally different from file synchronization services such as Dropbox, Microsoft SkyDrive, or Google Drive, as it is not synchronizing files automatically with the local system. Only files that are explicitly accessed get downloaded temporarily to the local system.
Rapidshare is currently planning to release the final version of RapidDrive in September 2012.
